What to practise

Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

This is a preparation category, not a prediction of a particular examination station. Read the candidate instructions and respond to the person and task you are given.

Make your approach clear

  • Read the order and establish what is currently running before making changes.
  • Explain the access site and patient observations you need to check.
  • Describe what you will record and when you will reassess the response.

Rehearsal prompt: “I will explain what I am checking, what I have found and what needs to happen next.” Adapt the words to the actual findings; do not memorise a claim you cannot support.

Common ways to lose the thread

  • Changing an infusion without resolving a mismatch in the order.
  • Focusing on the pump while overlooking the patient.
  • Documenting intake without considering the rest of the fluid balance.
