Your scenario and task

You are the RN on a hospital ward. Ben Cooper, aged 38, has a signed order for sodium chloride 0.9% 1000 mL intravenously over eight hours. The infusion has not started. Check readiness and the fluid order, calculate the pump rate and explain monitoring. Complete the supplied practice record. Speak to the patient and describe each assessment as you perform it. You have eight minutes; describe and select physical actions in this online exercise.

What this type of station practises

Connect the fluid order to the person’s current assessment, access site and fluid balance. Be ready to explain a discrepancy and seek clarification.

In “Checking a maintenance fluid prescription”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in ward. Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
