Your scenario and task

You are the RN in an emergency department. Wei Chen, aged 44, has sodium chloride 0.9% running through a right forearm cannula. He reports new discomfort. Assess the patient and infusion, manage the immediate concern and document your action. Complete the supplied practice record. A second RN is available. You have eight minutes; describe and select physical actions in this online exercise.

What this type of station practises

Connect the fluid order to the person’s current assessment, access site and fluid balance. Be ready to explain a discrepancy and seek clarification.

In “Pain and swelling at an infusion site”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in ed. Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
