Your scenario and task

You are the RN in an aged care facility. Margaret Davies, aged 88, is receiving prescribed sodium chloride 0.9% through a nurse-led residential outreach service. She has heart failure and becomes breathless. Assess the patient and infusion, take immediate safety action and communicate the concern. Complete the supplied practice record. Speak to the patient and describe each assessment as you perform it. A second RN is available. You have eight minutes; describe and select physical actions in this online exercise.

What this type of station practises

Connect the fluid order to the person’s current assessment, access site and fluid balance. Be ready to explain a discrepancy and seek clarification.

In “New breathlessness during residential IV therapy”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in aged-care. Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
