Your scenario and task

Nora Ellis will transfer to another ward later today. Her prescribed IV fluid has been running since 10:00 and she transfers to Ward 4 East at 11:00 with an RN escort. Review the order and bedside setup, describe the required nursing care and complete the fluid handover record. Casey and Dr Lee are available. Casey is the receiving RN on Ward 4 East; Dr Lee can be contacted.

What this type of station practises

Connect the fluid order to the person’s current assessment, access site and fluid balance. Be ready to explain a discrepancy and seek clarification.

In “A fluid review before transfer”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in ward. Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
