Your scenario and task

Irene Watts, 60, is on a surgical ward with a new intravenous fluid order for potassium replacement after diarrhoea. Check the order, the product and the patient, and act on your findings. Dr Taylor Singh is reachable by phone and RN Alex Morgan is on the ward. Document your actions in the blue folder.

What this type of station practises

Connect the fluid order to the person’s current assessment, access site and fluid balance. Be ready to explain a discrepancy and seek clarification.

In “Reviewing Irene's potassium replacement order”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in ward. Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
