Your scenario and task

Renee Parker has been assessed by the GP for reduced oral intake. A signed short intravenous fluid order and pump are available. Check suitability and the order, calculate the rate and demonstrate starting the infusion with the second RN. Complete the fluid record. The patient answers personal questions; the examiner supplies requested examination findings. Dr Taylor Singh is reachable by phone. RN Alex Morgan is available.

What this type of station practises

Connect the fluid order to the person’s current assessment, access site and fluid balance. Be ready to explain a discrepancy and seek clarification.

In “A short prescribed infusion in a GP clinic”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in gp. Practise reviewing a fictional infusion order, describing a site assessment and handing over a fluid balance concern. Calculation practice should retain units and use the supplied order and equipment details.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
