What to practise
Practise discharge education, a conversation with an anxious relative or explaining an unfamiliar procedure. Ask about language, access and cultural needs rather than making assumptions.
This is a preparation category, not a prediction of a particular examination station. Read the candidate instructions and respond to the person and task you are given.
Make your approach clear
- Find out what the person already understands and what concerns them.
- Explain in manageable parts and use teach-back without testing or blaming.
- Use an appropriate interpreter when needed and involve supporters with permission.
Rehearsal prompt: “I will explain what I am checking, what I have found and what needs to happen next.” Adapt the words to the actual findings; do not memorise a claim you cannot support.
Common ways to lose the thread
- Using clinical jargon after the person signals confusion.
- Speaking only to a relative when the patient can participate.
- Mistaking a polite nod for informed understanding.
