Your scenario and task
You are the RN in a general practice clinic. Mai Pham, aged 57, has been offered a routine dressing assessment but cannot comfortably discuss medical details in English. Her adult daughter offers to translate. Establish communication support, explain the proposed care and check informed choice. Complete the supplied practice record. Daughter Lan is present; the examiner relays qualified telephone interpretation if arranged. You have eight minutes. Say each action as you perform it.
What this type of station practises
Help the person understand, participate and make informed choices. Good communication changes with the person’s needs rather than following a fixed speech.
In “Interpreter-supported consent for wound care”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in gp. Practise discharge education, a conversation with an anxious relative or explaining an unfamiliar procedure. Ask about language, access and cultural needs rather than making assumptions.
These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.
Say-and-do preparation
Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
