Your scenario and task
You are the RN in an aged care facility. Dorothy Green, aged 85, has diabetes and decision-making capacity. Her daughter asks you to remove all preferred foods and not tell Dorothy why. Explore Dorothy’s goals, respond to her daughter’s concern and agree on a respectful care review. Complete the supplied practice record. Daughter Jane is present. You have eight minutes; describe and select physical actions in this online exercise.
What this type of station practises
Help the person understand, participate and make informed choices. Good communication changes with the person’s needs rather than following a fixed speech.
In “Family concern about a resident’s meal choice”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in aged-care. Practise discharge education, a conversation with an anxious relative or explaining an unfamiliar procedure. Ask about language, access and cultural needs rather than making assumptions.
These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.
Say-and-do preparation
Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
