Your scenario and task

George Bennett has a painful swollen leg. The GP has recommended hospital assessment, but he does not want to go. Explore his reasons and understanding, discuss the risks and obtain a clinician-supported plan. Do not coerce transfer. The patient answers personal questions; the examiner supplies requested examination findings. Dr Taylor Singh is reachable by phone. His daughter Helen can be phoned with his permission.

What this type of station practises

Help the person understand, participate and make informed choices. Good communication changes with the person’s needs rather than following a fixed speech.

In “A resident declines a recommended hospital assessment”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in aged-care. Practise discharge education, a conversation with an anxious relative or explaining an unfamiliar procedure. Ask about language, access and cultural needs rather than making assumptions.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
