Your scenario and task

Oliver Price is waiting in ED after a forearm injury. His father is upset about the wait and worries that the arm will be damaged. Assess immediate concerns, respond to the father without making promises and agree a review and communication plan. The patient is a manikin; address the patient and the examiner voices their answers and supplies findings. RN Alex Morgan is available. Mark Price is present.

What this type of station practises

Help the person understand, participate and make informed choices. Good communication changes with the person’s needs rather than following a fixed speech.

In “An anxious parent while a child awaits review”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in ed. Practise discharge education, a conversation with an anxious relative or explaining an unfamiliar procedure. Ask about language, access and cultural needs rather than making assumptions.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
