RN OSCE marking criteria:
standards in practice.

Each station has its own assessment criteria. The handbook maps these to the seven RN Standards for Practice and its recommended references; a generic script cannot replace responding to the task.

How to read the four bands

Above standard describes performance above the station standard; Meet standard describes performance meeting it. Below standard and Well below standard describe performance below and substantially below it. These plain-language explanations are not a numerical conversion.

Your result letter includes an overall outcome and each station’s name, score, pass mark, result and band. Station criteria are specific to the task. Public candidate resources do not provide a universal passing percentage or a bank of confidential station criteria.

Seven standards, seven ways to reflect

The following are original study summaries of the standards, rather than a reproduction of their text or examination criteria.

  1. Critical thinking: explain why information matters and check the evidence behind a decision.
  2. Professional relationships: communicate respectfully, seek consent and involve the person.
  3. Capability: recognise limits, ask for support and remain accountable for your practice.
  4. Assessment: gather relevant information systematically and clarify gaps.
  5. Planning: connect the assessment to priorities and a person-centred care plan.
  6. Safe care: show appropriate care, risk management and escalation within scope.
  7. Evaluation: review the person’s response, document and adapt the next step.

How we turn standards into practice feedback

After a practice station, review your conversation, selected actions and chart entries. The estimated report connects examples from your work to the seven standards and suggests a focus for the next rehearsal. For example, explaining a concern and requesting review provides material to reflect on communication and safe care; recording the response supports reflection on evaluation.

This feedback is a learning aid. It is not examiner judgement, clinical certification or a prediction of your examination result. Practise physical technique with supervision.

Questions about this RN OSCE guide

Is there one public RN OSCE pass percentage?

No universal public pass percentage is provided in the candidate resources. Each station has its own assessment criteria. The result letter gives your station score, station pass mark, outcome and band.

Are AI practice bands an examination result?

No. Our estimated feedback is for practice planning. It helps you review evidence from your conversation and records against seven RN practice standards; it cannot certify clinical competence or predict an exam outcome.
