Your scenario and task

Ella Morgan is brought to a GP treatment room with wheeze after exercise. Her aunt is present with parental permission. Perform a focused respiratory assessment, communicate your concern and complete the child record. Ella is represented by a manikin; speak to her directly. Dr Taylor Singh is reachable by phone. Her aunt Ruth Morgan is with her.

What this type of station practises

Build an assessment around the presenting concern rather than reciting every assessment you know. Combine the person’s account, relevant examination and a clear next step.

In “Focused breathing assessment in a school-aged child”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in gp. Practise explaining a respiratory review, a focused neurological check or a limb assessment. Use the information supplied in the reading card; do not assume findings that were never given.

These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.

Say-and-do preparation

Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
