Your scenario and task
You are the RN in an emergency department. Omar Ahmed, aged 52, is eight minutes into a red cell transfusion and suddenly feels unwell. Before starting he was alert with temperature 36.8°C, HR 88, BP 124/76, RR 18 and SpO2 98% on room air. Assess the change, manage a suspected transfusion reaction and communicate the response. Complete the supplied practice record. Speak to the patient and describe each assessment as you perform it. A second RN is available. You have eight minutes; describe and select physical actions in this online exercise.
What this type of station practises
Rehearse communication, identity checks and recognition of a possible reaction. In-person training remains essential for the practical equipment and bedside procedure.
In “Rigors and hypotension during red cells”, use the task in the reading card to decide what to assess, explain and record in ed. Practise explaining the process to an anxious patient, checking that required information is available and reporting a new symptom during a fictional transfusion. Follow current national guidance and local clinical procedures in real care.
These are general rehearsal aims, not the answers to this scenario. Respond to information obtained during practice rather than a memorised solution.
Say-and-do preparation
Prepare the sequence and language with a related checklist. Online rehearsal develops thinking and explanations; physical technique needs supervised in-person practice.
