How to use this checklist
Read the fictional task first. Work through each prompt out loud, using only the information supplied. Where a clinical detail is missing, say what you need to clarify rather than inventing it.
Explain consent and the checking responsibilities.
“I will explain why the bedside checks and your consent matter.”
Identify information missing from the supplied fictional record.
“I need the missing information before this check can be complete.”
Rehearse responding to a new symptom and obtaining help.
“Please tell me about any new symptom; I will respond and obtain the required help.”
Plan the handover and documentation of the concern.
“I will hand over the concern, the response and what still needs to happen.”
Check your explanation
- Explain consent and checking responsibilities before describing the equipment.
- Describe the baseline and ongoing observations required by the scenario.
- Communicate a new concern promptly and explain how you will obtain help.
Watch for these omissions
- Treating pre-transfusion checks as an administrative formality.
- Overlooking the patient’s report of a new symptom.
- Leaving the receiving clinician unclear about urgency.
Connect it to a scenario
Practise explaining the process to an anxious patient, checking that required information is available and reporting a new symptom during a fictional transfusion. Follow current national guidance and local clinical procedures in real care.
Repeat with a different fictional situation to check that your explanation responds to the task rather than a memorised script. Review the current ACSQHC Communicating for Safety Standard and RN Standards for Practice alongside supervised skills training.
