From language to clinical practice
From OET
to the RN OSCE.
English preparation is one part of registration. First confirm your own pathway; the Stream B assessment route is not required for every overseas nurse.

Start with your eligibility
Use the NMBA Self-check and Portfolio information to identify the process that applies to your qualifications. The order and requirements in your IQNM dashboard take priority. An OET result does not itself decide your stream or grant registration.
Self-check → Portfolio → NCLEX-RN → OSCE → registration
For the Stream B examination pathway, complete the required orientation and Portfolio requirements, pass the NCLEX-RN and then complete the RN OSCE before applying for registration. The NCLEX-RN may be completed before or after the Portfolio stage. Eligibility for OSCE is confirmed in your dashboard.
What changes after OET?
In language practice you learn to explain, listen and organise a conversation. In an OSCE you must also assess, make safe decisions, demonstrate required care, document and evaluate. Clear English helps you show your clinical reasoning, but it cannot replace clinical skills.
Keep the useful habits
- Ask open questions, then clarify relevant details.
- Explain in plain English and check understanding.
- Make consent and the person’s preferences part of your plan.
- Practise a concise ISBAR request to a colleague.
